UPDATED:

After a nationwide search, Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools has named Daniel Keever as its new superintendent, effective June 1.

Keever, previously the school division’s deputy superintendent, has been serving as interim superintendent since Olwen Herron retired Jan. 31. He joined WJCC Schools in 2020 and was named deputy in 2023. His 30-year career in public education includes experience as a school security officer, teacher, instructional specialist, assistant principal and principal.

School board Chair Sarah Ortego said the board is “extremely excited” to see him in the role.

“We interviewed a lot of people and it was not a forgone conclusion,” Ortego said Tuesday at a board ӽ紫ý. “We put a lot of time and thought and effort and there were many rounds, and Dr. Keever emerged at the top every time.”

Keever said he was “incredibly humbled and honored” by the board’s decision.

“It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I look forward to working with each of you and our stakeholders as we push forward our students toward academic excellence, as we continue to work with our staff on relationship building, and we place just the preeminence on student success,” Keever said. “This is an extremely special community, rich in history, guided by a shared vision and focused on ensuring that every student is known, supported and inspired to reach their full potential.”

Keever’s term will run for three years until June 30, 2028.
