HAMPTON — An altercation at a downtown restaurant and lounge escalated to a shooting that left a 29-year-old man dead Monday night, authorities said.

Officers were dispatched to Chances Restaurant and Lounge, located at 555 Settlers Landing Road near the street’s intersection with Old Hampton Lane, at about 10:48 p.m. They found the man, later identified as Xavier Sterling of Hampton, suffering from a serious injury. Police believe an altercation started inside the restaurant and continued outside where Sterling was shot.

First responders attempted life saving measures, but Sterling was pronounced dead at a local hospital, the Hampton Police Division said in a statement. He died of his shooting wound.

Detectives are investigating the shooting as a homicide, officers said. The police division seeks the public’s help in identifying the person responsible for the shooting.

Sterling’s death comes less than a month after another downtown shooting at a lounge, wherein 25-year-old DeAngelo Osborne was similarly shot and killed outside Karma Restaurant and Lounge, police said.

No additional information was immediately available.
